Moving a hot tub, or need one removed?

The process of moving a hot tub can be stressful and strenuous to say the least. Hot tubs are typically large, bulky, and weigh several hundred pounds – even when drained of water. If you are planning on relocating, you likely don’t have the proper equipment or manpower needed to safely move it. That’s where Mile High Hot Tubs comes in. Our expert hot tub movers are here to help make sure that your hot tub is relocated without any damage occurring during transit.

We also offer our professional hot tub removal service to take away old or broken outdoor spas if you no longer need them. Whether it’s time to upgrade your current one or you’re moving from Colorado Springs to Denver, we’ll be able to quickly remove the outdated unit. Our team will dismantle the spa, transport the pieces away from your property, and dispose of them in an eco-friendly manner! Don’t hesitate to rely on us for a safe and quick removal process – we work hard to get rid of the hot tub as painlessly as possible while still adhering to all safety protocols and standards.

The delivery team is highly skilled and can navigate tight spaces to properly install your hot tub. Sufficient space must be provided to enable the tub to be maneuvered onto its side. It is important to take measurements of gates or narrow passages that the team will need to pass through. Then just to be sure, measure it again.

Pro tip: As you are taking measurements, look at immovable structures that need to be maneuvered around such as A/C units or sheds and make note of uneven pavement.

For Coast Spas, all self-contained spas use 120VAC or 240VAC electrical spa packs. The owners manual instructions describe the only acceptable electrical wiring procedures. Spas wired in any other way will void your warranty and may result in serious injury. All installations should be completed by a certified electrician. The electrical connection can be set-up before your hot tub is delivered.

If you are purchasing an EcoSpa there are two possibilities.  Some EcoSpas use 110 Volts.  For these, a GFCI power cord is supplied with all 110 Volt models.  For EcoSpas that use 220V, you must hire a certified electrician to install a 220V, 50 Amp GFCI breaker and to connect the wiring to your spa per all local and national codes.

It is recommended to arrange for the electrician’s visit to coincide with the delivery of the hot tub. If the electrician is there, they can coordinate with the delivery specialists to get everything done properly.

Visualizing the appearance of your hot tub in the spot you have chosen can be challenging until it is physically present. If the hot tub or swim spa is going to be installed on a patio or deck, you will need to check the dimensions carefully and make sure the space is rated for the weight of the full hot tub or spa.  We recommend at least 100lbs/sq ft.  Remember, changing the position of a hot tub on your own can be challenging after the delivery team departs. Once the tub is filled it will be immovable!

Pro tip: Before the delivery team arrives mark the space where the tub will go with tape in the dimensions of the tub.

When preparing for a hot tub delivery, it’s important to make sure the path from the truck to your desired location is clear and free from obstacles. This means making sure there is enough clearance for them to pass through doorways and hallways, as well as ensuring there are no items blocking their way that could cause delays. The path the delivery team will take should be free of obstacles, including patio furniture, toys, and yard equipment. It helps to walk the path yourself first and make note of any potential issues, so you can fix them before the day of delivery arrives.  Don’t forget about clearing any leaves, snow or ice that could cause the delivery personnel to slip!

The hot tub itself will be on end while in transit and during delivery. This means it can be placed in tight areas with spatial restrictions. The only issue may be that it is going to have to be moved around a few times while being transported or brought into your home. To reduce risk of damages or impact on its surroundings, it’s advisable that any furniture that could get in the way is moved out beforehand as long distance moving is not always an option when deliveries are concerned.

Pro tip: Don’t just look down, look up!  Do you have tree limbs hanging down that might get tangled up in the tub as it is moving?  If so, do a quick trim.

The neighbors may show interest in the hot tub that will be installed in your backyard. It’s important to maintain good relationships with neighbors. It’s a good idea to let them know that you have scheduled the delivery of your hot tub. The delivery truck could be parked in front of a neighbor’s residence, or the crew may need to use a neighbor’s property for unloading and moving the tub to your location. Providing advance notice to your neighbors can assist in preventing unexpected outcomes.

Delivery day for a hot tub can be an exciting event, and even your pets may show extra enthusiasm. A lively puppy may cause some challenges during the delivery process. The gates will be unlocked, and unfamiliar individuals will be coming in and out of the dog’s territory. You may want to consider finding a place for your dog to stay during the day, such as a friend’s house or a daycare.

Mile High Hot Tubs has a skilled delivery team. However, it is worth your piece of mind to check in with the delivery team when they arrive, to go over the delivery route and point out any potential issues.  Once the tub or swim spa has reached the actual destination, check in again to make sure the placement is exactly where you want it.  By doing these two things you will ensure that your hot tub or swim spa arrives safely to the exact spot you want it!

Frequently ask questions about moving a hot tub

Whether you are moving a hot tub from one location at your home to another or from one home to another or are just getting rid of your current hot tub, it is important that the hot tub be drained prior to the arrival of the removal team.  This is a simple thing to do if you have not done it before.  If you have a garden hose, attach it to the hot tub’s drain spout.  Once it is securely connected, open the drain and that’s it!  Make sure the water draining from the tub is directed to a safe drainage spot and remember it can take a little while to drain all the water.  Those hot tubs are pretty big!

If you can disconnect all the connections yourself that is fine.  You should at least be able to turn off the heater and any other electrically controlled aspects of the tub.  If you are uncomfortable doing the actual electrical disconnect yourself, we recommend that you hire a good electrician.

As you get ready to install your hot tub, check the laws where you live to see if you need a building permit. Some places require a permit if a hot tub will be installed outdoors. Check local zoning regulations and homeowners association rules regarding hot tubs, as well.

It is not recommended that a hot tub be placed directly on the grass.  Ground is inherently unstable and fluctuates with the amount of moisture.  Given how heavy a full hot tub is, a significant amount of moisture in the ground it is sitting on can cause it to sink or tilt.  A hot tub base needs to be level and stable.  For the best results you can use one of the following:

Deck: Your deck should already be a level surface.  This can be an ideal location to place a deck if it is large enough and is rated to support the weight. We have locations in many areas of Colorado so we probably have a team near you.  If you are concerned that your deck won’t be able to hold the weight, let us come out and examine it before we deliver your hot tub or spa.

Concrete pad for a hot tub: An excellent choice to place a hot tub, a concrete pad can be done quickly and made level and to size specifications.  If you have a concrete pad in your yard already, it just needs to be checked to ensure that it is level and on a stable surface.  Our experts at Mile High Hot Tub can confirm this for you.

Spa pads: Spa pads are specifically designed to support a swim spa or hot tub. Spa pads are modular so you can put together as many as you need to form the surface that you want.  The pads interlock so they are easy to put together.  If you are interested, we have spa pads that you can purchase with your hot tub that we can install for you before we deliver your hot tub or swim spa.  Ask us about our spa pads.

If you are looking for a hot tub mover in Denver, Colorado and access to the location where your hot tub is going to be placed is difficult or limited due to tight spots, then you may want to consider using a crane. Cranes can provide an easy solution for getting spas and swim spas past or into tight spots. Mile High Hot Tubs hot tub movers will have recommendations for crane movers who will move your hot tub or swim spa carefully and safely.  The crane company will visit your property to assess any potential access problems and to ensure that the intended site is within safe reach.
